Red Eléctrica and its Moroccan counterpart carry out maintenance work on the reserve cable of the submarine electricity link between Spain and Morocco

The work, which is being carried out in Moroccan waters, is maintenance work that was already scheduled and is not in response to any recent incident involving the subsea link

Red Eléctrica, the subsidiary of Redeia responsible for the transmission and operation of the national electricity system, and its Moroccan counterpart, L'Office National d'Electricité et de l'Eau Potable (ONEE), are currently carrying out scheduled maintenance work on cable 4, or the reserve cable, of the electricity interconnection between Spain and Morocco.

This work, which is being carried out in Moroccan waters by the cable ship Skagerrak, owned by the Norwegian company Nexans, is not due to any recent breakdown or issue regarding the electricity link between Spain and Morocco. The work consists exclusively of replacing a section of the backup cable.

The interconnection between Spain and Morocco is made up of two circuits and consists of seven cables. Of these, cables 1, 2 and 3 correspond to the first line and cables 5, 6 and 7 to the second. Cable 4 is the reserve cable for both circuits. The two links cross the Strait of Gibraltar and connect the two countries by way of the Tarifa substation at the Spanish end of the link to the Fardioua substation at the Moroccan end. The entire infrastructure  is owned in equal shares (50/50) by the Moroccan L'Office National d'Electricité et de l'Eau Potable (ONEE) and Red Eléctrica.

Weather permitting, and once the final tests have been carried out, it is estimated that all the work could be completed before the end of November.
