Red Eléctrica, listed in the Ministry of the Environment’s carbon footprint registry

The acting minister for Agriculture, Food and the Environment, Isabel García Tejerina, has given the Chairman of Red Eléctrica de España, José Folgado, the certificate of registration in the Spanish Registry of carbon footprint, offsetting of emissions and carbon dioxide absorption projects.

The registry, which is managed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, through the Spanish Office for Climate Change (OECC), is an initiative of said Ministry, launched in 2014 to promote the fight against climate change through the calculation and reduction of the carbon footprint of the activities of Spanish organisations, as well as the promotion of projects to reduce and offset their emissions.

The registration of Red Eléctrica has been made possible because the Company calculates and verifies its direct emissions and those associated to energy consumption. Furthermore, it includes information about indirect emissions, among which are those associated to the purchase of goods and services, business travel, employee commuting and the internal transport of materials. The Company also has a Climate Change Action Plan, which was approved last year.

With regard to those actions which Red Eléctrica currently has underway to reduce emissions, noteworthy is the work associated with the improvement in the management of SF6 gas, as well as the implementation of energy efficiency measures, the contracting of green energy, the development of the Sustainable Mobility Plan and initiatives to offset emissions, such as the Red Electrica Forest project.

The carbon footprint registry already has 322 organisations with a total of 538 carbon footprints having been registered. In addition, there have been 11 carbon absorption projects registered. On the other hand, 7 organisations have already wanted to offset all or part of their carbon footprint within the registry.
