Red Eléctrica and the University of the Balearic Islands renew their collaborative framework agreement

Red Eléctrica de España and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) have renewed their collaborative framework agreement initiated in 2009, through an agreement signed today by the Company’s Regional Delegate, Eduardo Maynau, and the rector of the UIB, Llorenç Huguet. The event, held in the rectory of the University, was also attended by the Deputy Rector for Innovation and Transference, Jordi Llabrés.

The new agreement is valid for a period of five years and establishes the general framework for collaboration in areas of an educational, cultural, scientific and technological nature.

The main objective of this agreement is to promote scientific and technological research and transference of results, and to promote initiatives and actions that contribute to sustainable development, especially in the fields of the environment, energy efficiency and new technologies.

In addition, it will also contribute to the dissemination of information regarding the electricity system and the role Red Eléctrica plays in this as system operator and manager of the electricity transmission grid.

The collaboration agreement will be put in place by means of determined agreements on specific courses of actions. One of them, of an informative nature, will be related to the celebration of the International Year of Light. Another specific project will be to conduct an economic study of the environmental and social benefits provided by the submarine electricity interconnections between the islands and the Spanish peninsula: the link between the Peninsula and Majorca currently in operation and the Ibiza-Majorca interconnection that is currently under construction.

Red Eléctrica has continued to collaborate with the University of the Balearic Islands for years, especially in the field of teaching and research. The renewal of the framework agreement is intended to give an additional boost to this relationship and extend it to other areas.
