The Mayor of Palma, Mateo Isern, the General Manager of System Operation Division for Red Eléctrica de España (REE), Andrés Seco, and the Company’s regional delegate for the Balearic Islands, Eduardo Maynau, today signed two agreements aimed at establishing a general relationship framework between the two institutions and the collaboration of the Company in the Smart City project being driven by the municipality.

The Palma City Council will launch, together with REE, a series of initiatives to promote technological innovation, the efficient use of energy and promote the use of electric vehicles in the area of the municipality. Similarly, REE will collaborate with the city council in implementing actions relating to social development and environmental protection, as well as in the analysis and dissemination of topics related to electricity.

Through the new Electric Vehicle Control Centre (CECOVEL), REE will monitor the participation of electric vehicles within the electricity system. The aim is to influence greater efficiency and the sustainability of resources of the electricity system and the better use of the peak hours of generation, so that the charging of electric vehicles is moved into the valley hours of demand. REE estimates that by applying intelligent management systems, the electricity transmission grid could, in the coming years, absorb up to a quarter of the total number of vehicles in Spain.

The Smart City project agreement, signed today between the Palma City Council and REE is of a pioneering nature, both in terms of the development of projects related to the promotion of electric vehicles and the development of smart grids. REE recognises the suitability of the Balearic Islands’ territory for the widespread use of electric vehicles, not only because of the fact that the scale and distances of the Balearic Islands’ adapt to the characteristics of this vehicle, but also due to the determining factors of sustainability related to the territory and the economic activity on the Islands.

By the signing of both agreements REE, as the sole transmission agent and manager of the Spanish electricity system, present in the Islands since 2004, strengthens its commitment to the social and economic development of the Balearic Islands.
