A total of 16 students from IES El Galeón and IES Magallanes, both located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, have won the first regional final of the Entreredes Olympics in Canarias. This victory has earned them the opportunity to represent the autonomous community in the national stage of the competition, which will take place on 2 June.

The event, held virtually on Wednesday, marked the end of an edition that saw the participation of 1,819 students from four schools in the region. A total of 63 students reached the regional final, which was supported by the Regional Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of Islas Canarias.

In the 1st year of secondary school category, the winning team from IES El Galeón was Sergio Pérez, Valentina Galindo, Pablo Tomás Gómez and Héctor Curbelo. This school also won in the 4th year category with the team made up of Abril Elena Fernández, Eric Vilacozma, Fernando Soto and Leonardo Frango.

IES Magallanes took victory in the 2nd year category with Keyla Trabieso, Ronaldo Aabrey, Luis García and Daniel Egea. In the 3rd year category, the winning team consisted of Fernando Manuel Delgado, Adriel Arturo González, Andoni Gárete and Alec Daniel Méndez.

A game to teach students about the Spanish electricity system and the energy transition 

Entreredes is an educational project launched by Red Eléctrica — the company responsible for electricity transmission and system operation in Spain– to teach younger generations how the Spanish electricity system and the energy transition work in an engaging, dynamic and interactive way. The initiative also seeks to spark young people’s interest in energy, innovation and technology, as well as their connection to the environment and social wellbeing, encouraging careers in STEAM fields and helping to shape energy-conscious citizens for the future.

In the Entreredes Olympics – the competitive side of the project – students play this video game in teams, virtually travelling across Spain through the power lines and substations of the electricity transmission grid. To progress, players must correctly answer questions related to subjects covered throughout the school year (Geography and History; Physics and Chemistry/Biology; Mathematics; Spanish Language and Literature, and Leisure and Culture), with a special focus on energy, the ecological transition and the Spanish electricity system.

This year’s winners from Islas Canarias will face off against students from other Spanish autonomous communities in the national final on 2 June, where they will compete to prove themselves the most knowledgeable about the Spanish electricity system and their school subjects.
