Red Eléctrica, Redeia's subsidiary responsible for electricity transmission and system operation in Spain, has received operational approval from the Regional Government of Andalucía for expanding the Benahadux substation with three new bays. This upgrade will boost the new railway corridors, strengthen the quality of electricity supply in the area, and help drive Spain’s ecological transition. 

With an investment of nearly 2 million euros, the expansion of the Benahadux substation will enable the grid to power the new railway lines of the Mediterranean Corridor and the High-speed Connection between Granada and Almería. These two infrastructure projects are essential for the region’s economic and social development, as well as for improving national connectivity.

In addition, the expansion will reinforce the distribution network, providing greater support for both current and future electricity demand. It will also increase the capacity for the evacuation of renewable energy generation in Granada and Almería.

This latest upgrade builds on other recent projects in both provinces, such as the expansion of the Íllora 220 kV substation —which will allow the connection of the future Saleres substation to ensure electricity supply in southern Granada— and the Tabernas 400 kV substation, also aimed at supplying electricity to the Mediterranean Corridor. As is commonly known, this corridor will connect the entire area with the rest of Andalucía, Spain, and Europe.

Through these infrastructures, Red Eléctrica reaffirms its commitment to developing Andalucía’s transmission grid, contributing to the region’s economic and social progress.
