Red Eléctrica resumes next week the works on Formentera for the land section of the new electricity link between Ibiza-Formentera

The cable-laying works will begin on 17 October for the land section along the PM820 road and civil works on the Es Ca Marí road will commence on 2 November

Next week, Red Eléctrica will resume the works associated with the land section in Formentera for the new 132 kV Ibiza-Formentera double link. In May, these works were temporarily suspended for the summer tourist season in order to minimise their impact.

As of Monday 17 October, the cable-laying works for the land section that runs along the PM820 road for the new electricity link that will bolster the existing connection with Ibiza will begin. All the civil works on this road as well as the installation of the necessary junction chambers for the deployment of the land section of the interconnection were completed before the summer tourist season started. Furthermore, two essential project milestones were also successfully completed: the horizontal directional drilling for the sea-coast approach and the associated offshore to onshore junction chambers.

The works alongside the PM820 road can be carried out without the need to close the road off to traffic, although a traffic regulation and signalling protocol will be activated while the works are carried out to make the circulation of vehicles compatible with the progress of the works. At all times, there will be coordination with the Island Council and other public administrations involved (General Directorate of Traffic), and there will be timely and sufficient advance notice of any impacts that may occur.

On the other hand, as of 2 November, the completion of civil works will proceed on the Es Ca Marí road to the new 132 kV Formentera substation, currently under construction, where civil works have already been completed and the substation equipment and its assembly has begun. The works along the Es Ca Marí road are expected to be completed before Christmas.

Based on the current schedule of works for the 2022-2023 period and the subsequent performance of the necessary pre-operational tests to ensure the operability and physical and electrical integrity of the new link, it is foreseen that the new submarine electricity link between the islands of Ibiza and Formentera will be commissioned by the end of 2023.
