Red Eléctrica, the Redeia company responsible for the transmission and operation of the electricity system in Spain, has completed construction of the new Calatorao 220 kV substation, located in the Zaragoza town of the same name. This infrastructure is strategically important for the development of new technological and industrial projects in the province, providing them with an electricity supply and helping to boost economic activity and job creation. 

In addition to the Calatorao substation, which is already operational, the project also involved the construction of a 1.5 km double-circuit line connecting it to the transmission grid via the Jalón–Los Vientos 220 kV line. The line runs through the municipalities of Épila and Calatorao and fetures state-of-the-art bird flight diverters to protect birdlife. The total investment amounted to €8.8 million. 

Construction of the Calatorao substation, which features double-busbar technology and is designed to supply consumers directly connected to the transmission grid, began in the first quarter of last year. Sustainability and minimising the environmental impact were priorities throughout the construction work. For example, excavated materials were reused to build the platform on which the substation rests, avoiding waste generation and the need to bring in materials from off-site. 

Throughout the project, Red Eléctrica worked closely with the local councils of Calatorao and Épila to determine the best location for the facility. This collaboration also enabled the rollout of several social initiatives linked to the project, most notably the construction of a waste collection and recycling point and the installation of air conditioning in classrooms at the public school in Calatorao, as well as the installation of LED lighting in Épila, resulting in energy savings.
