The ‘Red Eléctrica de España’ yacht competes in the 36th ‘Copa del Rey’ in the Swan 42 class
  • Following seven editions competing in the X-35 class
  • The Company sponsors the ‘Enlace’ trophy, which will be awarded to the top finishers in each category at the midpoint of the competition

Today, Red Eléctrica de España has presented, at the Real Club Náutico de Palma,  the sailing yacht and crew that will participate in the 36th edition of the Copa del Rey sailing competition that takes place from 29 July to 5 August in the waters of the Bay of Palma. With this sponsorship, for the eighth year running, the Company consolidates its support for this important sporting event and its social commitment to the Balearic Islands.

This year the sailing yacht Red Eléctrica de España, skippered by Javier Sanz who is President of the Real Club Náutico de Palma and of the Organising Committee of the Copa del Rey, has been entered in the Swan 42 class, after taking part in the X-35 class in the previous seven editions of the competition, with the aim of consolidating the good track record of the team in the competition after being proclaimed champion of the X-35 class in 2015 and 2016, and also having been awarded in 2016 the title of absolute champion among the four classes of one-design boats that competed on elapsed time (real time).

In this edition of the Copa del Rey sailing competition around 140 boats from 24 nationalities will be participating, spread across ten categories. Once again, in addition to the winners of each class, there will be two absolute winners, one in the one-design class, who compete on elapsed time (real time), and another on corrected time.

The ‘Enlace’ Trophy

For the fourth consecutive year, Red Eléctrica will sponsor the ‘Enlace’ (Link) trophies, whose name refers to the submarine electricity interconnection projects between the islands carried out by the Company in the Balearic Islands. The trophies are awarded to the crews who, at the midpoint of the competition, are leading the competition standings in their class.

The competition in the Swan 42 class

The Red Eléctrica de España competes this year in the Swan 42 class, a category especially attractive as the race is settled between sailing yachts with identical characteristics and in real time. The Swan 42 is taking part for the first time ever in the Copa del Rey as a class on its own; ten teams from five nationalities: Spanish, French, Italian, Swedish and Argentine have registered for the competition in this class.

The boat and the crew

The Red Eléctrica de España is a cruiser/regatta sailing yacht, model Swan SC42, with a length of 12.98 metres and a beam of 3.93. It is a design by the Argentine engineer Germán Frers, manufactured in fiberglass in Nautor's Swan shipyards in Finland, which combines design, speed and cruising benefits in sailing.

The crew of the Red Eléctrica de España, is a very compact crew characterised by the ability to work as a team and the experience of all its members. In addition to Javier Sanz as helmsman and skipper, the team is made up of David Madrazo (tactician); Alberto Viejo (pitman); Federico Armeñanzas (mainsail trimmer); Marcos Iglesias (spinnaker trimmer); Carlos Martínez (headsail trimmer); Javier Sanz Jr. (helmsman); Eduardo García (mastman-bowman); Rodrigo Sanz (bowman); Alejandro Nadal (mastman), and Luca Lanzillo (navigator).
