Electricity consumption of large companies increased 1.8% in 2015

The electricity consumption of large and medium-sized companies increased 1.8% in 2015 compared to the previous year, according to data from the Red Eléctrica Index (IRE). Broken down by sector, industrial consumption grew 2.4% and consumption in the services sector fell 1%. The effects of seasonal and working patterns were factored in when calculating this data.

Compared to 2014, of the five activities with the highest electricity demand the metallurgy industry grew 0.9%, the chemical industry fell 0.7%, the manufacturing industry for other non-metallic mineral products grew 6.3%, the food industry increased 1.3% and the paper industry fell 4.5%.   

The activities that contributed most to the growth in the consumption of large companies have been: the manufacturing industry for other non-metallic mineral products with a growth of 6.3% the collection, purification and distribution of water (12%), the manufacturing of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (8.7%), and the metallurgy industry (0.9%).

With regard to December 2015, electricity consumption of large and medium companies, after having factored in the effects of seasonal and working patterns, increased by 2% over the same month the previous year. By sector, industrial consumption increased by 1.9% and the services sector fell 0.9%.

Compared to December 2014, the five activities with highest electricity consumption were: the metallurgy industry where demand decreased 1.4%, whereas the chemical industry increased 1.2%, the manufacturing of other non-metallic mineral products grew 13.1%, the food industry rose 3.9% and the paper industry by 0.1%.

The activities that contributed most to the growth in consumption of large companies in December have been: the collection, purification and distribution of water, with an increase of 33.9%, the manufacturing of other non-metallic mineral products (13.1%), the food industry (3.9%), the timber and cork industry, except for furniture, basketwork and straw plaiting (14.4%) and the manufacturing of rubber and plastic products (3.7%).
