- The reforestation is included in the nationwide The Red Eléctrica Forest project
The Regional Minister for Rural Affairs of the Xunta de Galicia, Ángeles Vázquez, and the Executive Chairman of Red Eléctrica de España, José Folgado, have signed today, in the presence of the President of the Xunta de Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, a collaboration agreement to reforest the Tremuzo public highlands, in the municipality of Outes (La Coruña), which establishes the general collaboration framework between both entities. This forest restoration project is encompassed within the The Red Eléctrica Forest project, which the Company carries out nationwide.
Thanks to the agreement signed, the restoration of an area of 40.9 hectares of the public highlands will be undertaken during 2016, through the planting of leafy tree species indigenous to the area in order to restore the native forest in the area, so as to assist the recovery of local flora and fauna, and improve the quality of the landscape.
Red Eléctrica will contribute around 200,000 euros for the reforestation project and the carrying out of accompanying awareness actions.
The Xunta de Galicia will undertake the management of the project, the monitoring and the upkeep of the reforestation actions, as well as the attainment of the necessary permits and authorisations, while Red Eléctrica will be responsible for contracting the reforestation work through local companies in order to promote green jobs in the forestry sector and socioeconomic development in Galicia.
The Red Eléctrica Forest is an environmental programme driven by the Company since 2009, with the aim of collaborating on the conservation of natural areas rich in biodiversity and the recovery of degraded areas, and to contribute to the fight against climate change allowing a part of the Company’s greenhouse gases emissions to be offset.
This initiative also responds to the commitment made by the Company to work with regional governments on sustainable economic and social development in the communities where the Company is located.
The restoration of the Tremuzo public highlands will be the tenth forest created by the Company, after those of Badajoz, Teruel, Cádiz, Murcia, Valencia, Vizcaya, Albacete, Majorca and Zamora, which has allowed a total of 696 hectares to be recovered and where more than 460,000 trees and shrubs have been planted, thus offsetting more than 100,000 tons of CO2.
