The electricity consumption of large and medium-sized companies rose 2.5% in August compared with the same month the previous year, according to data from the Red Eléctrica Index (IRE). Broken down by sector, industrial consumption grew 3.5% and consumption in the services sector fell by 1%. The effects of seasonal and working patterns were factored in when calculating this data.

According to the IRE, in the last twelve months, the electricity consumption of these companies, once the effects of seasonal and working patterns were factored in, has increased by 2% over the same period last year. By sector, industry consumption rose by 3.2% and the services sector fell by 1.4%.

Compared to August 2014, the five activities with the highest electricity consumption were the metallurgy industry which grew 3.1%, the chemical industry with a slight increase of 0.1%, the manufacturing industry for other non-metallic mineral products which increased by 8.4%, the food industry rose by 1.2% and the paper industry fell 3.6%.

Similarly, activities that contributed most to the growth in consumption of large companies have been: the metallurgy industry, with an increase of 3.1%, the manufacturing industry for other non-metallic mineral products (8.4%), the manufacturing of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (8.3%), the collection, purification and distribution of water (8.8%) and the manufacturing of electrical equipment and materials (17.8%).
