Red Eléctrica and the city council of Santa Eulària des Riu sign a collaboration agreement

  • Red Eléctrica will allocate 300,000 euros for initiatives focused on the town of Jesús
  • The Company will collaborate on the construction of the parish’s cultural centre and the renovation of its road network while developing the telecommunications infrastructure that will enable fibre optic connection

The Mayor of Santa Eulària des Riu, Vicente Marí Torres, and Red Eléctrica’s regional delegate in the Balearic Islands, Eduardo Maynau, today signed an agreement establishing a collaboration framework between the Company and the city council in relation to the route of the overland section of the submarine interconnection project between Ibiza and Majorca. According to the agreement, Red Eléctrica will contribute 300,000 euros to the municipality, which will be used for social activities and actions related to the patrimony, the renovation of street and pavement networks and activities in the field of communications for the benefit of the municipality and, in particular, the town of Jesús.

The preparatory works for the submarine electricity interconnection project between Ibiza and Majorca include the execution of the works for the interconnection’s overland section. The route runs within the municipal limits of Santa Eulària and especially affects the street network of the town of Jesús. In this context, the agreement contemplates direct actions to improve the street and pavement network in the town of Jesús, and other activities of a social nature which, in turn, will particularly have a beneficial impact on this urban town, as well as on the municipality as a whole.

Firstly, the agreement entails that Red Eléctrica will fund the asphalting, paving and finishing touches of the urban works that will be carried out by the city council of Santa Eulària in the Canari, Estruç, Gavina streets, and in different sections of the Tucà and Llinquer streets in the centre of Jesús. The renovation of this set of streets is added to the repairs and restorations already carried out by Red Eléctrica, in accordance with the municipal specifications, in the streets of the town directly affected by the works for the overland section of the interconnection, which are the Faisán, Cap Martinet, Jesús, Kiwi and Calandria streets.

Furthermore, the agreement opens the way for Red Eléctrica’s sponsorship of a municipal initiative that has a strong cultural element and seeks to boost architectural heritage. The Company will collaborate financially in the construction of the Cultural Centre of Jesús, currently being carried out by the town council and which is located in the town of Jesús. The centre will have multipurpose spaces, an auditorium, library and municipal offices, amongst other services. The Santa Eulària des Riu city council foresees the works to be finalised shortly and expects the centre to be inaugurated in September.

Another point included in the collaboration agreement between the city council and Red Eléctrica refers to giving access to the municipality to the telecommunications infrastructure developed by Red Eléctrica included in the overland deployment of this electricity interconnection. The interconnection includes a fibre optic link throughout its route, included for the adequate telecontrol and remote management of the interconnection. The spare capacity of this infrastructure can be used by different operators with the objective of providing telecommunications services to the population of the municipal area. A specific point will be made available in the optical fibre link in order to allow the connection which will enable the delivery of this service in the municipality.

Finally, the agreement establishes the collaboration of Red Eléctrica in various complementary activities that the city council carries out intended to enliven the social, cultural and commercial fabric of the municipality.
