The demand for electrical energy on the Spanish peninsula in the month of May, after having factored in the seasonal and working patterns, fell 3.2% with respect to the same month last year. Gross demand was 20,109 GWh, 1.6% lower than that registered in May 2011.

In the first five months of the year, after having factored in the seasonal and working patterns, consumption was 2.1% below that registered last year. Gross electricity demand in this period was 106,522 GWh, 0.9% less than the same period in 2011.

In May, wind power production reached 3,750 GWh, an increase of 20.9% compared with the same period last year, and represented 17.7% of the total production. This month the generation obtained from renewable energy sources represented 37% of the total production, higher than that recorded in May 2011, which was 34.6%.

56.5% of electricity generation during the month was obtained using technologies which produce zero CO2 emissions.
