In the month of November, gross demand for electrical energy on the Spanish peninsula was 20,400 GWh, representing a fall of 7.1% with respect to the same month in 2010. After factoring in the effects of seasonal and working patterns, the consumption on the Peninsula showed a fall of 3.9% in this period, primarily due to the mild temperatures.

In the first eleven months of 2011, gross demand reached 233,474 GWh, which represents a decrease of 1.6% with respect to the same period in 2010. After factoring in the effects of seasonal and working patterns, consumption was 0.8% down on that of the same period last year.

A historic challenge for Red Eléctrica
At 2 am on 6 November, 59.6% of the demand (20,922 MW) was covered by wind power (12,476 MW), a figure which exceeds the previous maximum of 54% recorded on 9 November 2010. This event represented a historic challenge that Red Eléctrica knew how to manage, as system operator, without putting the security of the supply at risk.

In November, energy produced by wind power was 3,738 GWh, which represented 17.7% of the total production.

During November, energy production obtained from renewable energy sources represented 32.1% of the total generation, 1.7 percentage points down on that registered in November 2010. In the first eleven months of the year, renewable energy generation represented 32.6% of the total, whilst in the same period last year the figure was 35%.

In the month of November, 51.8% of electricity production came from technologies which produce zero CO2 emissions.
