The demand for electrical energy on the Spanish peninsula in the month of February, after having factored in the seasonal and working patterns, dropped 1.2% with respect to the same month last year. Gross demand was 22,777 GWh, 7% higher than in February 2011 owing to the cold temperatures this month and to the fact that this is a leap year.

In the first two months of the year, after factoring in the seasonal and working patterns, consumption was 1.9% lower than that of the same period in 2011. Electricity demand in this period was 45,782 GWh, a growth of 0.2% with regard to the same period in 2011.

For a second consecutive month, thermal coal was the technology which contributed the most to the whole of the generation mix, with a total of 21.9% of the total electricity production.

In the month of February, energy production obtained from wind power reached 4,890 GWh, representing an increase of 22.1% with regard to the same period last year which represented 20.1% of the total generation. During this month generation obtained from renewable sources represented 29.8% of the total production, 6.2 percentage points down on that registered in February 2011.

In the month of February, 49.4% of electricity production was obtained from technologies which produce zero CO2 emissions.
