Wind power energy increases 20%
Demand for electrical energy falls 1.1% in July

The demand for electrical energy on the Spanish peninsula reached 22,004 GWh in the month of July, representing a drop of 1.1% with respect to the same month in 2010. Gross demand, that is to say, without factoring in the effects of seasonal and working patterns, has fallen 5.3% during this period, mainly due to the fact that this month of July registered milder temperatures than those registered in July last year.

In the first seven months of the year, electricity consumption reached 150,223 GWh, which represents an increase of 0.1% with respect to the same period in 2010. However, without factoring in the effects of seasonal and working patterns, the demand during this period fell 1.4% in comparison to the same period last year.

In the month of July, energy production obtained from wind power was 2,936 GWh, representing an increase of 20% when compared to the same period last year. Therefore, in this month 14.3% of the total production came from wind power, three percentage points higher than in July 2010.

During this month, generation coming from renewable energy sources represented 28.5% of the total production, similar to that registered in July 2010. In the first seven months of this year, the production of renewable energy represented 35.8% of the total production, whilst in the same period last year this was 38.9%.

In addition, 47.9% of the electricity generation during the month came from technologies which produce zero CO2 emissions.
