Discover what Red Eléctrica is, what we do, and why we are the backbone of the electricity system in Spain and the ecological transition.
Red Eléctrica begins undergrounding the final section of the Sant Martí–Alcúdia line as part of the second Peninsula–Islas Baleares interconnection
The project, which will free up space on the site of the future converter station, is scheduled to begin in the second half of October, following the granting of the Favourable Environmental Impact Statement, the Prior Administrative and Construction Authorisation, and the Declaration of Public Utility.
Amicable agreements have been reached with all affected landowners.
This is the first project associated with the future Peninsula–Islas Baleares interconnection to get underway.
In the second half of October, Red Eléctrica, the Redeia subsidiary responsible for the transmission grid and the operation of the Spanish electricity systems, will begin work on undergrounding the existing 66 kV overhead line between the Sant Martí and Alcúdia substations, in order to free up the space allocated for the future converter station of the second subsea interconnection between the Peninsula and Islas Baleares.
The works involve replacing the existing 403-metre overhead section that crosses the site of the future converter station with a new 570-metre underground section.
Construction is getting underway now that the line modification has received a Favourable Environmental Impact Statement (DIA) from the Government of Islas Baleares – in compliance with the conditions set out therein – and has been granted the corresponding Prior Administrative and Construction Authorisation and the Declaration of Public Utility. Furthermore, Red Eléctrica has engaged in extensive dialogue, successfully reaching amicable agreements with all the owners of the land through which the modified section will run.
The modification of the line along the section closest to the Sant Martí substation has thus become the first project linked to the future second Peninsula–Islas Baleares interconnection to receive a Favourable Environmental Impact Statement, as the project is deemed to avoid any significant adverse impacts on the environment.
The project for the second interconnection between the Peninsula and Islas Baleares (known as PenBal 2) is currently undergoing environmental assessment by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. This follows the conclusion of the second public consultation phase for the project, prompted by the new onshore route agreed upon within the dedicated working group comprising the Government of Islas Baleares, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, the Island Council of Mallorca, Alcúdia Town Council, representatives of the residents of Alcúdia, and Red Eléctrica.
