Red Eléctrica, the Redeia subsidiary responsible for electricity transmission and system operation in Spain, has completed construction of the new Torrejón de Velasco 400 kV substation. This is a multifunctional facility that reinforces the power supply to the high-speed rail corridor heading towards the Levante region, increases the security of the electricity system and facilitates the integration of new renewable generation in the Comunidad de Madrid.

Red Eléctrica has invested €20 million in this project, which includes, in addition to the substation, a line to connect it to the existing transmission grid via the Morata–Villaviciosa 400 kV corridor. The construction work, which began in July 2025, took approximately one year. With its completion, the company has finalised a key reinforcement to continue strengthening the transmission grid in the south of the region.

The substation comprises nine bays, enabling it to achieve the various objectives of the project. On the one hand, it reinforces the power supply for the Madrid–Albacete–Alicante–Valencia rail corridor, one of the busiest in the region and a main logistical hub for central and eastern Spain; and, on the other, it enables the integration of new renewable energy, driving the ecological transition in the Comunidad de Madrid.

Furthermore, the new Torrejón 400 kV substation features two new 150 MVA reactors. The first is already installed, and the second is scheduled for installation by the end of the year. These devices will help reinforce the reliability of the electricity system in the area, backed by an additional investment of €7.1 million. 

The reinforcements carried out to date are included in the list of projects eligible for European Union funding (NextGenerationEU – Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan) and form part of the 2021–2026 Grid Planning approved by the Council of Ministers.

Red Eléctrica continues to invest heavily in the Comunidad de Madrid to expand, modernise and strengthen the transmission grid, keeping pace with growing demand, industrial and business development, and the electrification of new uses. Within this framework, the company has already completed reinforcements such as the expansions of the Anchuelo, Arroyo de la Vega, Morata, Aena and Parla substations, which reinforce grid capacity and support the integration of new renewable generation. Likewise, Red Eléctrica continues to advance with new developments in strategic areas such as the Henares Corridor, with projects including San Fernando, Complutum, Cisneros, Nuevo Meco and Anchuelo, currently in various stages of construction and administrative processing. All these initiatives contribute to a more meshed and secure grid that is prepared to integrate more renewables and meet the region's current and future needs.
