Red Eléctrica, the Redeia subsidiary responsible for the transmission and operation of the electricity system in Spain, will begin work in the coming days on the 400 kV Cardoso substation in the municipality of Carreño. This infrastructure will strengthen the electricity supply in an area of high industrial and urban demand.

The new facility involves an investment of €26.5 million and is designed as a GIS (Gas-Insulated Switchgear) substation – compact and smaller in size, housed inside a building for better landscape integration – featuring two switchyards operating at 400 kV and 220 kV. Works are expected to be completed in approximately 18 months.

This new substation marks the start of construction on the Central Asturias Power Ring, a strategic project aimed at strengthening the transmission grid in central Asturias, supporting the industrial development of the Principality, and fostering the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industry. In addition, it will contribute to a greater integration of renewable energy into the national electricity system.

With this step, Red Eléctrica reinforces its investment commitment to the transmission grid in Asturias and helps generate new development opportunities for the region, boosting its economic growth and energy transition.
