Red Eléctrica, the Redeia subsidiary responsible for power transmission and the operation of the electricity system in Spain, has brought into service the expansion of the Betxí substation, a 220 kV facility located in the province of Castellón. This upgrade to a strategic infrastructure facility significantly reinforces the local power grid for both industrial and residential use, boosting socio-economic growth across the Plana Baixa region.

This initiative was authorised in April 2024 as part of the Specific Amendments to the current Energy Planning framework. The project, approved by the Council of Ministers, is legally binding for Red Eléctrica.

The project mainly aims to boost the flow of electricity from the transmission grid to the distribution network. This will provide both the Plana Baixa region and the wider province with a more robust grid, substantially increasing its capacity to absorb growing demand from the industrial sector – particularly the ceramics sector – and residential consumption.

This project also aligns with the objectives of the energy transition, which depend on developing a stronger, more meshed transmission grid. Such infrastructure is vital to efficiently channel the progressive integration of renewable energy and advance decisively towards the decarbonisation and electrification of Castellón’s economy and industrial sector.

Through these types of initiatives, Red Eléctrica reinforces its commitment to the socio-economic development of the Valencian Community, investing in key infrastructure to support the region’s sustainable development.
