Red Eléctrica, the Redeia subsidiary responsible for the operation and transmission of the electricity system in Spain, has expanded the Peñaflor substation in Villamayor de Gállego (Zaragoza) to strengthen electricity transmission capacity in the area and meet future demand.

The Spanish Government Delegate in Aragón, Fernando Beltrán, visited the substation with Red Eléctrica's delegate in the region, José Ignacio Lallana, to review the completed installation of the new transformer. The project, which represents an investment of €10 million, strengthens one of the main electricity supply infrastructures serving the city of Zaragoza and its metropolitan area, home to more than 800,000 people and a number of major industrial zones.

Work is also under way to build two new bays at the 400 kV switchyard. In the future, these will be connected to two major electricity consumers to pave the way for new investment in the region.

The expansion of the Peñaflor substation is part of the April 2024 Modification of Specific Items to the current Transmission Grid Development Plan, approved by the Council of Ministers and binding for Red Eléctrica. The amendment has driven the development and expansion of several substations across Aragón's three provinces. These include the Espartal 220 kV, Ave Zaragoza 220 kV, Esquedas 220 kV, Montetorrero 220 kV, Magallón 400/220 kV, Plaza II 220 kV, Mudéjar 400 kV, Cartujos 220 kV and Villanueva de Gállego 220 kV substations.
