Infrastructure in Castilla-La Mancha

Red Eléctrica expands two substations in Toledo to strengthen the transmission grid and power the railway corridor to Extremadura

The company has completed the expansion of the Calera y Chozas 220 kV substation, a key project to meet growing demand in the area and strengthen electricity supply, supporting the economic and social development of both the province and the region as a whole.

It has also completed new bays at the 220 kV Torrijos substation to meet the power requirements associated with the electrification of the Madrid–Extremadura railway corridor, boosting territorial cohesion and socio-economic development in Castilla-La Mancha.

Red Eléctrica, the Redeia subsidiary responsible for electricity transmission and system operation in Spain, has completed the expansion of the Calera y Chozas 220 kV and Torrijos 220 kV substations in the province of Toledo. Both projects, which have already received their operational authorisation, strengthen the transmission grid in Castilla-La Mancha and support the electrification of new strategic infrastructure.

At the Calera y Chozas substation, Red Eléctrica has added two new 220 kV bays, further reinforcing its role as a key transmission grid hub to meet the needs of energy-intensive consumers and strengthen the area's productive economy. Meanwhile, the expansion of the Torrijos 220 kV substation includes two new bays to power the railway corridor that will connect Castilla-La Mancha with Extremadura.

Approximately €3 million has been invested in the development of this infrastructure, which is included in the current Electricity Transmission Grid Plan. Both projects are included in the list of initiatives eligible for funding by the European Union – NextGenerationEU – under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

A stronger grid to support the region's development

These projects are part of Red Eléctrica’s ongoing efforts to provide Castilla-La Mancha with a more robust, meshed and sustainable transmission grid. Strengthening these substations will further improve the security and quality of electricity supply, facilitate the integration of new demand and support the rollout of key infrastructure for electric rail mobility and greater regional connectivity.

With these expansions now in service, Red Eléctrica reaffirms its commitment to Toledo and Castilla-La Mancha by developing a transmission grid that is ready to meet the current and future needs of households, businesses and strategic infrastructure, while contributing to an energy transition that delivers tangible benefits for the region.
