Red Eléctrica, the Redeia subsidiary responsible for the transmission and operation of the electricity system in Spain, will tomorrow begin a decisive phase in the construction of the new 220 kV Espinardo substation and the 11.2-kilometre double-circuit underground line that will connect it to the Murcia and El Palmar substations. The company has designed an intensive action plan starting tomorrow that will span the months of July and August, aiming to accelerate works in the northern section of the route (Espinardo) and minimise the impact on urban mobility and citizens. 

This strategic scheduling takes advantage of the time of year with the lowest population density in the capital and coincides with the break in the academic year at the University of Murcia (UMU) campus. By removing interference with university activity in this area, the construction teams will have the optimal conditions to speed up the execution of the project, which is thus entering a crucial phase in its development. 

In coordination with the City Council, the company has designed a comprehensive action plan to make the most of the summer, thereby minimising the urban impact and disruptions to mobility.

Thus, capitalising on the summer period of reduced urban mobility, traffic restrictions will be in place around Espinardo and on Avenida de Juan Carlos I from tomorrow, Friday 26 June. These can be checked on the project's website. 

The aim is to carry out the trenching works with two simultaneous work fronts to ensure maximum agility. Furthermore, the summer will mark the start of the first of the scheduled ducting works designed to bypass critical geographical barriers such as the River Segura and the tram infrastructure, guaranteeing the continuity of the line without disturbing the surface.

A strategic infrastructure project for the city

This project is included in the current electricity planning cycle approved by the Council of Ministers and binding for Red Eléctrica, which will invest €55.3 million in its construction. Its objective is to reinforce the supply of power from the transmission grid to the distribution network to make new industrial, commercial and residential projects viable.

The entirely underground route of the line runs along Avenida de Juan Carlos I, Avenida del Reino de Murcia, Avenida de Miguel Induráin, Avenida de los Dolores and Ronda Sur. By creating a new closed-loop and meshed structure, Murcia’s electricity system will gain in efficiency and resilience. 

Thanks to this summer acceleration effort, the impact on urban mobility will be strictly limited to the coming months.  Red Eléctrica is maintaining close collaboration with the Murcia City Council to coordinate the works and guarantee the highest quality of the road infrastructure once the project is completed.
