Red Eléctrica, Redeia's subsidiary responsible for the transmission and operation of the Spanish electricity system, has completed and commissioned the expansion of the Montearenas 400 kV substation to advance the energy transition in Castilla y León, by enabling the integration of renewable energy and storage, which is essential for providing greater flexibility to the electricity system.

The expansion of the substation, located between the municipalities of Ponferrada and Congosto in the province of León, consisted of installing two new bays. Red Eléctrica has invested €2 million in these works, which were carried out over an 8-month period.

The expansion is included in the 2021–2026 Electricity Transmission Grid Plan and contributes to the decarbonisation targets for the electricity system, as well as improving the electricity supply necessary to support future growth, boosting economic activity, industrial development, job creation, and, consequently, population retention in Castilla y León.

Furthermore, within the framework of its Comprehensive Impact Strategy, which aims to promote a positive environmental and social impact in the territories where it develops its infrastructure, Redeia has promoted collaboration agreements with Congosto and Ponferrada. Through these, approximately €56,000 is being contributed to projects for installing photovoltaic panels to pump water from the Bárcenas reservoir and solar streetlights on public roads.
