Red Eléctrica —Redeia’s subsidiary responsible for electricity transmission and system operation in Spain— has this week started work on the new 220 kV substation in Adrall. This key infrastructure is crucial for the new electrical interconnection with Andorra and will also bolster the security and quality of the electricity supply in La Seu d’Urgell. 

This initiative will expand and upgrade the existing 220 kV substation through the construction of a new facility using GIS (Gas-Insulated Switchgear) technology. This indoor-housed technology ensures a minimal visual footprint and greater landscape integration. Upon completion, the old Adrall substation is set to be replaced by the new GIS facility. 

This project paves the way for the future 220 kV double-circuit line connecting Adrall and Andorra, thereby enhancing the power exchange capacity with that country. 

Furthermore, the new 220 kV GIS facility in Adrall will simultaneously bolster the security and quality of supply to the La Seu d’Urgell area, while aligning the facility with a double-busbar configuration in accordance with current operating procedures. 

The project represents an investment of €7.73 million and is included in the current Electricity planning. This sits alongside the construction of the new interconnection line with Andorra, which is set to begin in the coming months.
