Red Eléctrica, the subsidiary of Redeia responsible for the transmission and operation of the electricity system in Spain, has completed the development of the new San Fernando 400/220 kV substation in the Comunidad de Madrid. This is a strategic infrastructure for the region, with which the company reinforces supply in the eastern area of the community by supporting the distribution network, and enables the integration of new renewable energy into the system. 

The new substation consists of an outdoor 400 kV switchyard and a 220 kV switchyard, the latter featuring GIS technology, which reduces its footprint and is integrated inside a building. Furthermore, this 220 kV switchyard incorporates new innovative insulation solutions that allow greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced by 99%, boosting the sustainability of these transmission grid infrastructures. 

To integrate the facility into the electricity system, Red Eléctrica has developed a line departing from the new 400 kV switchyard connecting it to the Morata 1–Morata circuit, and another two from the 220 kV switchyard: an underground line to Algete–Ardoz and another double-circuit line to the Puente de San Fernando substation.

Red Eléctrica has invested €44 million in this strategic infrastructure for the Comunidad de Madrid, which is part of the current Planning approved by the Council of Ministers. Specifically, the action relating to the 220 kV switchyard for the reinforcement of the distribution network is included in the list of projects eligible for European Union funding – NextGenerationEU – Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
