Red Eléctrica, the Redeia subsidiary responsible for system operation and electricity transmission in Spain, has completed the repowering of the 220 kV electricity transmission line linking the Mesón do Vento substation with the Santiago de Compostela substation, with the aim of reinforcing the electricity supply and the integration of renewables. 

The repowering entails an increase in the line's transmission capacity, from the initial 342 MVA (megavolt-amperes) to the current 447 MVA. This was carried out by replacing the conductor cable, which spans 48 kilometres through the municipalities of Órdenes, Trazo, Santiago de Compostela and Ames, and by heightening 13 of the existing towers.

Red Eléctrica has invested over €800,000 in this project, which is included in the current Electricity Transmission Grid Plan, approved by the Council of Ministers. This investment by Red Eléctrica aligns with the Plan's guiding principle to maximise the use of the existing grid, thereby promoting a more sustainable transmission grid. This is a key initiative to boost competitiveness, economic growth and job creation in Galicia, adding to the rest of the projects that Red Eléctrica is carrying out in the region.
