Red Eléctrica installs markers on power lines in Huesca to enhance the safety of mountain aerial rescue operations
Additional marking work will be carried out in 2026 near Boltaña, following the projects completed this year in Campo and Yésero on the 220 kV Mediano–Pont de Suert and Biescas–Pragneres lines.
This initiative is part of the ongoing collaboration with the Guardia Civil’s Air Service based in Huesca, from which its helicopters operate.
Red Eléctrica is installing markers on several power lines in the province of Huesca to improve safety during mountain air rescue operations. This action is part of the collaboration plan established with the Guardia Civil’s Aragón Air Unit, which includes marking various line segments located within the flight corridors used by the rescue helicopters of this unit.
The visibility of power lines is a critical factor during air rescue operations conducted in hard-to-reach mountainous areas such as those found in the Pyrenees. To ensure safety in such situations, the ground wires of the power lines are equipped with markers, making them more visible and thus reducing the risks associated with emergency flights.
Specifically, the most recent work was carried out on the 220 kV Mediano–Pont de Suert line as it passes through Campo (Huesca). These efforts follow those completed last April on the 220 kV Biescas–Pragneres line in Yésero, in the same province, where the markers were installed directly onto the conductor cables since that section does not have a ground wire. In 2026, similar work is planned in the town of Boltaña, also in Huesca, on the 220 kV Sabiñánigo–T de Escalona line.
The markers are installed by highly specialised personnel who move along the cables in a secure container to attach the brightly coloured spheres, which are visible from a long distance. Red Eléctrica designs, develops, and manages its assets with a focus on integrating infrastructure into the natural environment and fostering optimal interaction with the various stakeholders who operate near them. Line marking plays a key role in this approach —whether through the installation of markers or bird-saving devices to protect birdlife— one of the main objectives outlined in the Sustainability Plan of Redeia, Red Eléctrica’s parent company.
