Red Eléctrica has expanded the 400 kV Solórzano substation in Cantabria, a key asset for supporting new industrial and renewable energy projects in the region. The Government delegate in Cantabria, Pedro Casares, toured the substation together with Antonio González Urquijo, Redeia’s regional delegate for northern Spain, where they reviewed firsthand the investments carried out at the facility. 

The expansion consisted of installing a reactor to enhance voltage control and improve energy flows across the transmission grid. Thanks to this technology, the facility is now more efficient and able to deliver a higher-quality electricity supply —an essential requirement for renewable development and new industrial demand.

The project, which has just entered operation, completed all administrative procedures and obtained all necessary permits in November 2024, with construction beginning in January 2025. The initiative represents an investment of €3.9 million and is included in the list of projects financed by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU – Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.

Additionally, as part of the Comprehensive Impact Strategy driven by Redeia —Red Eléctrica’s parent company— the organisation has signed a collaboration agreement with the Solórzano City Council worth €50,000, aimed at improving and upgrading local roads and pathways. This agreement reflects Red Eléctrica’s commitment to supporting development and well-being in the areas where it operates, contributing to improvements in municipal services for local residents. 

This project is also included in the 2021–2026 Electrical Planning. All the actions Red Eléctrica is currently undertaking in Cantabria aim to strengthen the region’s electricity system to drive industrial growth, stimulate the economy, and facilitate the integration of renewable energy generated locally —key steps in advancing the ecological transition.
