Red Eléctrica, Redeia’s subsidiary responsible for the operation and transmission of the electricity system in Spain, has completed the repowering of the 220 kV Escatrón-Espartal line (in the province of Zaragoza). This initiative aims to strengthen the energy supply for industry, thereby boosting competitiveness, economic growth, and job creation.

Entailing an investment of 5.3 million euros, the work forms part of a larger project crucial for attracting new investment opportunities for technological and industrial ventures.

Besides this intervention, the project also includes the repowering of another 220 kV line between Montetorrero and Espartal, as well as the expansion of the 220 kV Espartal substation, which was completed last year. Both lines can therefore double their transmission capacity without needing to build new axes, maintaining the current voltage level. This marks a significant step up in terms of supply efficiency and reliability. Altogether, these interventions represent an investment of 15 million euros by Red Eléctrica.

At the same time, sustainability and protection of birdlife were priorities in this operation. Red Eléctrica has installed bird protection devices along the 43 km length of the line. This action will ensure the protection of the birdlife and forms part of Redeia’s Sustainability Plan, the parent company of Red Eléctrica.

The repowering aligns with the current Transmission Grid Development Plan, which was approved by the Council of Ministers and is binding for Red Eléctrica. The plan includes actions in the autonomous community of Aragon, totalling an investment of around 400 million euros through 2026.
