Red Eléctrica starts building work on the new Francolí substation to support the decarbonisation of Tarragona’s chemical industry

The new 220 kV substation will enable large-scale consumers to connect to the grid, boosting the competitiveness of Tarragona’s industrial sector.

The project represents an investment of €6 million and is scheduled to be commissioned by December this year.

Red Eléctrica, Redeia’s subsidiary responsible for electricity transmission and system operation in Spain, has this week begun construction of the new 220 kV Francolí substation. The project is aimed at supporting industrial development and the decarbonisation of Tarragona’s petrochemical sector.

The new facility will allow high-consumption industrial users to connect directly to the transmission grid. Specifically, the project includes three connection points for companies located in the northern chemical hub of Tarragona, an area characterised by intensive electricity demand. Therefore, this is a key infrastructure project that will help enhance the competitiveness of local industries, promote economic development in the province, and support job creation.

The new substation is being built on the border of the towns of Vilallonga del Camp and El Morell and will connect up to the existing 220 kV El Morell–Perafort transmission line. Red Eléctrica is investing €6 million in the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

This initiative is part of the Transmission Grid Development Plan 2021–2026, which also involves other essential facilities closely tied to the region’s chemical industry. These include the planned Escatrón–Els Aubals–La Secuita transmission line and the new La Secuita substation, both of which are designed to meet the growing energy needs associated with industrial decarbonisation in the region.
