The European Commission has selected Redeia's Community Liaison Officers initiative as one of the eight most outstanding citizen engagement practices in the EU. The role of the community liaison officer was implemented for the first time by Redeia during the construction of the Salto de Chira pumped-storage hydroelectric power station, which Red Eléctrica, a Redeia subsidiary, is building on the island of Gran Canaria. The aim is to ensure continuous and direct contact with residents in the local area. The initiative is based on two-way, transparent and accessible communication, enabling the resolution of incidents, the anticipation of needs and the building of trust.

The European Commission’s recognition comes as part of its Grid Action Plan, which includes the Pact for Engagement to promote early public engagement in the development of electricity infrastructure. The Commission presented the most innovative and replicable citizen engagement practices, including Redeia’s community liaison officers, at the Power of Participation: Advancing Public Engagement in Grid Planning forum, held on 23 October in Brussels.

The Salto de Chira project has been developed - right from the project permitting and public consultation phases - with a focus on constant dialogue with local communities, seeking maximum shared benefit in its implementation. Therefore, in line with Redeia's Comprehensive Impact Strategy, the role of community liaison officer was created at the start of the works in order to maintain a responsive, open and structured dialogue with local residents.
