Development of a strategic project
Red Eléctrica begins the second phase of work on the future Morella-La Plana line
  • The tasks included in this second phase encompass the foundational work for 45-line supports that will be executed over the coming months.
  • The new line, with 25% fewer supports than the existing one, contemplates dismantling the current route, thus reducing the impact of the infrastructure on the environment.
  • This infrastructure will help strengthen the electricity supply and will be a key instrument for generating wealth and ensuring the viability of future industrial developments planned in Castellón and the Valencian Community as a whole.

The future Morella-La Plana electrical line, work on which began in June 2022, continues to achieve milestones in its construction. Over the last few days, Red Eléctrica has embarked on the second phase of its work. This involves laying the foundation work for 45 supports, also known as towers, distributed along the route. To carry out the actions at this stage, agreed-upon solutions have been reached with the landowners.

The works included in this phase consist of vegetation clearing, the appropriate opening or adaptation of access roads, earth moving, and foundation work for the supports. Furthermore, once the final approvals have been obtained, the rest of the work will begin with the aim of putting this essential infrastructure at the service of the citizens of Castellón and the Valencian Community as soon as possible.

Upon the commissioning of the line, the current route will also be dismantled in accordance with the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) approved in February 2021. The dismantling operation, which has a budget of over 4 million euros, significantly reduces the impact of the infrastructure on the environment. The reason is that the new line will have 25% fewer supports than the existing one and a more sustainable route that respects protected areas.

In fact, modifications outlined in the EIS have been incorporated, improving the route's compatibility with the Valltorta-Gassulla Cultural Park by adapting the line's path to stay outside its boundaries.

Energy for economic development and the energy transition

The Morella-La Plana line will help strengthen the reliability, efficiency, and sustainability of the electricity supply in Castellón, facilitating progress in the energy transition.

This infrastructure will transmit essential energy for the economic transformation of the province and the Valencian Community, making its commissioning urgent and key to enabling industrial activity and generating employment.

Since the project's inception, the company has been in contact with local representatives, including municipalities and other stakeholders, creating a space for dialogue to find common solutions and areas of collaboration for local social development.

The project as a whole

The project contemplates a 400-kilovolt double-circuit line in the province of Castellón, which represents a total investment of over 60 million euros. It is included in the current Electricity Transmission Grid Planning 21-26, approved by the council of ministers and binding for Red Eléctrica.

In addition to the works covered by the first phase, which included the foundations for 29 supports, Red Eléctrica has already begun the expansion of the two substations located at the ends of the line, both in Morella and La Plana (Almassora), as part of the project itself. The work on the first substation was completed at the end of 2022, and the second is expected to be finished in 2023.
