Spain's electricity demand increases by 2.4% in August
Renewables grow by 11% and reach 13,640 GWh, 53.6% of the total in Spain, with solar photovoltaic as the leading generation source.
National electricity demand increased by 2.4% in August compared to the same month last year, after adjusting for working patterns and temperatures. In gross terms, demand reached 23,137 GWh, 3.7% higher than in the same month of 2025.
Also in August, based on available data, it is estimated that self-consumption installations generated around 1,600 GWh.

In the first eight months of 2026, Spain recorded a total electricity demand of 175,858 GWh, representing an increase of 2.8% compared to the same period of the previous year. Taking working patterns and temperatures into account, this growth stands at 1.7%.
Electricity generation
Renewable technologies increased their contribution by 11% this August compared to the same month in 2025, reaching 13,640 GWh and securing a 53.6% share of the total generation structure.
Solar photovoltaic leads generation for the fifth consecutive month with a 29.2% share, achieved by increasing its electricity generation by 27.5% to 7,445 GWh. This technology surpassed its daily electricity generation record on 5 August, reaching 281.2 GWh.
The second technology in the August mix was combined cycle, accounting for 20.7%, followed by nuclear at 18.6%, wind at 13.3%, and hydro with 6.9% of the total.
During the month of August, 72.2% of electricity generation was free from CO2 equivalent emissions, representing an 8.2% increase in zero-emission GWh produced.

When accounting for electricity generation data from self-consumption installations, the renewable share of the Spanish mix rose to 55.1% in August, according to available estimates.
To promote greater utilisation of renewable generation, a total of 954 GWh was integrated into the grid in August through battery storage and pumped-storage hydro.
The electricity system in Islas Baleares and Canarias
Electricity demand in Islas Baleares increased by 15.4% in August after adjusting for working patterns and temperatures. In gross terms, monthly demand is estimated at 850,670 MWh, 16.4% higher than that recorded during the same period of 2025. In the first eight months of 2026, electricity demand in Islas Baleares stood at 4,609,048 MWh, 6.4% higher than in the same period of the previous year.
Regarding electricity generation, combined cycle, accounting for 63% of the energy produced in Islas Baleares, was the leading generation source on the islands this month, followed by diesel engines, responsible for 11.3%, and solar photovoltaic at 10.6%, after increasing its monthly output by 18%. Thus, renewable energy grew by 20.6% compared to the same period last year, reaching a share of 13% of the total generation in the archipelago.
During this eighth month of the year, the subsea link between the peninsula and Mallorca helped cover 23.5% of electricity demand in Islas Baleares.
Turning to the Canarias archipelago, electricity demand grew by 1.9% compared to the same month in 2025, adjusting for working patterns and temperatures. In gross terms, demand stood at 843,145 MWh, 3.1% higher than in August of the previous year. For the year to date in 2026, Canarias recorded a demand of 5,988,031 MWh, 1.6% higher than in the same period of 2025.
Lastly, in terms of electricity generation, combined cycle was the leading source in Canarias in August, accounting for 35.9% of the total, followed by wind, a technology that reached a share of 22.9% after generating 192.8 GWh, 29% more than in August 2025.
During this month, renewable electricity generation increased by 21.6% in the archipelago, accounting for 28.7% of the total energy generated.
