Red Eléctrica, Redeia’s subsidiary responsible for electricity transmission and system operation in Spain, has this week commissioned the new 220 kV Francolí substation, located in the municipality of Vilallonga del Camp (Tarragona). Its main objective is to support industrial development and the decarbonisation of the petrochemical sector.  

The new infrastructure allows large consumers to connect directly to the transmission grid. Specifically, the project includes three connection points for companies with high electricity consumption in Tarragona’s northern chemical industrial park. It is therefore a key initiative that drives company competitiveness, supports the province’s economic development and creates employment.

Located on the Vilallonga del Camp–El Morell boundary, the new substation connects to the existing 220 kV El Morell–Perafort line. The project represents a €6 million investment by the company and is included in the list of eligible projects for the European Union under NextGenerationEU – Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.

This project is part of the 2021–2026 Planning, alongside other critical infrastructure initiatives closely linked to the chemical sector that will be developed in the region over the coming years. Examples include the future Escatrón–Els Aubals–La Secuita line and the new La Secuita substation, also designed to support various decarbonisation projects within the Catalan economy.
