The electricity consumption of large and medium-sized companies grew 0.5% in March compared with the same month the previous year, according to data from the Red Eléctrica Index (IRE). Broken down by sector, industrial consumption increased 1.5% and consumption in the services sector fell by 2.8%. The effects of seasonal and working patterns were factored in when calculating this data.

According to the IRE, in the last twelve months, the electricity consumption of these companies, once the effects of seasonal and working patterns were factored in, has increased by 2.6% over the same period last year. By sector, industry consumption rose by 3.9% and the services sector fell by 1.4%.

Compared to March 2014, the five activities with the highest electricity consumption were the metallurgy industry which grew 2%, the chemical industry increased 0.1%, the manufacturing industry for other non-metallic mineral products rose by 7.2%, the food industry grew 0.8%, while the paper industry dropped 8.3%.

Similarly, activities that contributed most to the growth in consumption of large companies have been:, the metallurgy industry which registered an increase of 2%, the manufacturing industry for other non-metallic mineral products (7.2%), overland and underground piped transport (15.4%), the manufacturing of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (6.4%) and the manufacturing of rubber and plastic products (3.5%).
