Business activities

Red Eléctrica de España, S.A., founded in 1985 in application of Law 49/1984, of 26 December, was the first company in the world exclusively dedicated to the transmission of electricity and the operation of Spanish electricity system.

Law 54/1997 regarding the electricity sector confirmed Red Eléctrica's role as key in the operation of the system, and Law 17/2007 confirmed Red Eléctrica as the sole transmission agent and operator of the Spanish electricity system carrying out its functions under a regime of exclusivity.

During 2010, and in accordance with this Law, the acquisition of the transmission assets from the electric utility companies was completed, including those assets of the Balearic Islands' and the Canary Islands' systems and it represented the consolidation of the Company as the sole transmission agent, converting it into the Transmission System Operator (TSO) of the Spanish electricity system.

As operator of the Spanish electricity system, Red Eléctrica establishes the electricity demand forecasts, oversees the operation of the generation facilities and manages the transmission facilities in real-time, constantly ensuring that scheduled generation in power stations matches consumer demand. Red Eléctrica performs its system operation functions not only on the peninsular system but also on the insular and extra-peninsular systems.

Additionaly, Red Eléctrica, in its role as manager of the high voltage transmission grid, acts as the sole transmission agent and is responsible for the transmission of electricity from the generating power stations to the centres for distribution to consumers, carrying out this function under a regime of exclusitivy. Similarly, the Company has the responsibility for developing, extending and maintaining the transmission grid under homogeneus and coherent criteria. It is also responsible for managing the flow of energy between external systems and guaranteeing third party access to the grid under equal conditions.

Red Eléctrica is the owner of the entire Spanish high voltage electricity grid: an extensive meshed grid with more than 42,000 km of electricity lines.

For Red Eléctrica the development of international business is a natural growth path which is focused mainly on the construction and operation of transmission grids outside Spain. Red Eléctrica has over 15 years of presence in South America, where it is currently managing transmission grids maintaining excellent availability rates of its facilities.

In Peru, Red Eléctrica manages and operates, through a concession contract, 942 km of 220 kV lines through the companies Red Eléctrica del Sur (REDESUR) and Transmisora Eléctrica del Sur. It is also currently undertaking the construction of another 244 km after being awarded in 2015 the concession contracts for the 220 kV Azángaro-Juliaca-Puno line (Transmisora Eléctrica del Sur 2) and the 220 kV  Montalvo - Los Héroes line (Transmisora Eléctrica del Sur 3), whose commissioning is expected in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

In Chile, Red Eléctrica, together with E-CL, is constructing with the first interconnection between the country’s north and central electricity systems (Mejillones - Cardones transmission line). The project, which is under construction, will be part of the main transmission system in Chile and consists of a 500 kV electricity line, 600 km in length, with its commissioning scheduled for the end of 2017.

For the Red Eléctrica Group, international business operations are an important milestone in the deployment of the Strategic Plan 2014-2019 and allow the Company's presence in South America to be increased significantly.

Red Eléctrica Infraestructuras de Telecomunicación (Reintel) undertakes the activity in the telecommunications sector, focused on the management and commercial use of the telecommunications infrastructure and, in particular, the leasing of dark fibre and technical spaces associated with them. Reintel is now the largest neutral operator of fibre optic infrastructure in Spain and has a network of over 32,000 km, after having formalised in 2014 the acquisition of the rights to the commercial management and use ,for a period of 20 years, of the ADIF’s dark fibre optic network not dedicated to rail service.
