Unique projects

In recent years, Red Eléctrica has been carrying out projects that, due to their unique nature and technical complexity, represent a very important technological challenge and highlight the investment capacity of the Company.

Noteworthy was the electricity interconnection between the Spanish peninsula and the Balearic Islands: a project that has become of world reference. This interconnection enabled the reliability and quality of supply on the Balearic Islands to be improved and represents a significant cost savings for the Spanish electricity system. Another very important infrastructure for the Company is the interconnection line between Spain and France through the eastern Pyrenees, which has allowed Spain to double its exchange capacity with Europe. On the other hand, the document processing for the new electricity interconnection between Spain and France through the Bay of Biscay has started.

In the upcoming years, our investment capacity and technological capabilities will be in addition demonstrated with the construction of the Soria-Chira pumped-storage hydropower plant. An energy storage facility that will become an effective tool for system operation in order to ensure supply, improve system security and optimize the integration of renewable energies in the island of Gran Canaria.

Go to the Electricity interconnection France-Spain

This new interconnection will enable the electricity exchange capacity between Spain and France to be increased up to 5,000 MW.

Salto de Chira pumped-storage hydropower plant

This energy storage facility is a key element in order to advance towards the sustainability of the new energy model in the Canary Islands, based on renewable energies.

Spain-France underground interconnection

This interconnection doubles the exchange capacity between France and Spain, resulting in greater security of supply and stability for both electricity systems.
