Environmental policy

With these challenges in mind, Red Eléctrica has established an environmental policy whose core principles provide a consistent framework for the management of the most significant environmental impacts.

Red Eléctrica has an Environmental Management System which sets out the responsibilities, of an environmental nature, of all areas of the Company. This system was certified in May 1999 according to the UNE-EN ISO 14.001 standard and registered under the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) since October 2001. In 2004, Red Eléctrica became the first business group in the energy sector that had the comprehensive triple certification for quality, environment and occupational health and safety for all its companies.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the creation of EMAS, in 2015 the European Commission has presented Red Eléctrica with a Silver Commemorative Certificate for being registered for more than 10 years and having constantly complied with EMAS requirements.

Red Eléctrica's effort to become an efficient and sustainable company has been recognised by the main sustainability rating agencies.

  • Red Eléctrica obtains the highest score (100 out of 100) in the biodiversity criteria in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index 2017.
  • ‘Good Practice of the Year 2017’ prize awarded by the Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI) in the Environmental Protection category.
  • The ‘Mapping of Birds Flight Paths’ project also received in 2015 a ‘Highly Commended’ certificate of recognition in the EFQM good practices awards.
