Respect for the natural environment, biodiversity conservation and commitment to the fight against climate change have always been the cornerstones of our environmental commitment.

Our challenges and commitments

Climate change

Contribute to the fight against climate change and promote energy saving and efficiency

Environmental policy

With these challenges in mind, Red Eléctrica has established an environmental policy whose core principles provide a consistent framework for the management of the most significant environmental impacts.

Environmental permitting process

All projects undertaken by Red Eléctrica are evaluated from an environmental standpoint, and the competent environmental authorities are informed and their approval is requested. This process is performed even for projects which do not need to be submitted to the environmental impact assessment procedure.

Red Eléctrica has an Environmental Management System which sets out the responsibilities, of an environmental nature, of all areas of the Company. This system was certified in May 1999 according to the UNE-EN ISO 14.001 standard and registered under the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) since October 2001. In 2004, Red Eléctrica became the first business group in the energy sector that had the comprehensive triple certification for quality, environment and occupational health and safety for all its companies.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the creation of EMAS, in 2015 the European Commission has presented Red Eléctrica with a Silver Commemorative Certificate for being registered for more than 10 years and having constantly complied with EMAS requirements.

Red Eléctrica’s effort to become an efficient and sustainable company has been recognised by leading sustainability rating agencies. In 2016, Red Eléctrica has obtained the maximum score in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index 2016, in the criteria of ‘Climate Strategy’ and ‘Biodiversity’ and inclusion in the CDP Leadership Index (A list): the Company has been recognised as part of the group of leaders, for its efforts and actions to combat climate change.

The project ‘Birds and power lines. Mapping of bird flight paths’ was good practice ‘Highly Commended’ by the EFQM 2015.

In 2014, Red Eléctrica de España was distinguished as a leading company in natural capital efficiency in the Utilities sector by the Natural Capital Leaders Index 2014, being the sole Spanish company selected by this index whose goal is to recognise companies that demonstrate leadership in terms of protection of natural resources and those that are pioneers in decoupling economic growth from environment impacts.

Red Eléctrica received the European Business Award for the Environment 2014 (Spanish section) in the special category 'Business and Biodiversity'.
