The Red Eléctrica Forest in Hellin is opened
  • It represents an investment of more than 200,000 euros and the reforestation of 111 hectares of land, affected by forest fires and desertification processes, through the planting 88,000 trees and shrubs
  • It is the seventh Red Eléctrica Forest nation-wide, bringing the total of the overall investment to over 1.1 million euros

The Red Eléctrica Forest in Hellin (Albacete) was officially opened in the presence of the Director General of Highlands and Natural Areas of Castilla La Mancha, Javier Gómez Elvira, the Head of the Forestry Service, Luis Fernández-Cernuda, the Head of Highlands and Natural Areas in Albacete, José Luis Fernández, in addition to the Mayor of Hellin, Manuel Mínguez, the city Councillor for the Environment, Marta Pérez and the rest of the Municipal Corporation. Representing Red Eléctrica de España was the Manager of the Environment Department, Roberto Arranz, and the regional delegate, José Ignacio Fernández.

111 hectares restored

The Red Eléctrica Forest in Hellin has enabled the reforestation of 111 hectares of land affected by forest fires and desertification processes. In order to do this, over 200,000 euros were invested, restoring the land and proceeding to plant 88,000 trees and shrubs, mostly Aleppo pines, Wild olive, Buckthorn, Black hawthorn, Kermes, Rosemary and other accompanying species.

In January 2014, Red Eléctrica de España organised a training session on environmental education in Hellin, in collaboration with the town council of the locality, coinciding with the “Red Eléctrica Forest” Week held from 15 to 18 January. The sessions, in which 315 volunteers participated, were targeted at school students and neighbours of Hellin and its districts, with the aim of raising awareness of the population on the importance of conservation of natural areas.

The Red Eléctrica Forest is a project of an environmental nature that has been carried out by the Company since 2009 with the aim of collaborating in the conservation of natural areas rich in biodiversity, the restoration of degraded areas, as well as contributing to the fight against climate change, and at the same time supporting rural economies and involving local people in the conservation of their territories.

An investment of over one million euros

The Red Eléctrica Forest in Hellín is the seventh project that Red Eléctrica undertakes on the Spanish peninsula after those already carried out in Badajoz, Teruel, Cádiz, Murcia, Valencia and Vizcaya. With an investment that already exceeds one million euros, this initiative responds to the commitment undertaken by the Company to collaborate with regional governments for sustainable economic and social development, the defence and protection of the environment, and the promotion of progress, culture and social well-being as essential pillars for creating value in areas where the Company is present.

In addition, with this project, Red Eléctrica offsets part of their CO2 emissions, collaborates on the conservation of biodiversity and contributes towards the development of local economies to the extent that reforestation works are carried out by local companies or associations.

In total, including the Red Eléctrica Forest in Hellin, 349,974 trees and shrubs have already been planted, and 567 hectares have been recovered nation-wide, offsetting 97,031 tonnes of CO2 to date.
