Marine Environment Sustainability Project (Balearic Islands)

Collaboration with local government for recovery and improvement of green spaces.

Red Eléctrica collaborates with local communities where its facilities are located through actions for conservation of their natural environment, with the aim of promoting sustainable rural development and biodiversity conservation.

Red Eléctrica has been collaborating since April 2019 with the Balearic Islands’ Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds to carry out two projects related to sustainable marine development. The first will focus on the collection of solid waste in the sea by the fishing fleet, while the second will consist of education and awareness raising actions to promote consumption of local fish.

The capability of the fishing fleet to collect solid wastes will be studied in comparison with other systems of collection that are practised at the surface near the coast and another study will be conducted on current habits and new models of consumption; the degree of knowledge of the local product; the penetration of fish into home and school menus; the role of the restaurant sector and local markets; and trade policy with respect to the large retail outlets.
