Red Eléctrica, the Redeia subsidiary responsible for electricity transmission and system operation in Spain, has completed the expansion of the 220 kV Cerdà substation this week. The expansion of this substation aims to drive the energy transition, boost the economy, and power the region's industrial sector.

Located in the Zona Franca, the expanded substation has involved an investment of more than €1 million by Red Eléctrica. It will enable the electrification of the Port of Barcelona's quays. To this end, the Port of Barcelona is developing the Port substation and the connection line linking it to the Cerdà substation.

The construction and expansion of the Cerdà substation, in which Red Eléctrica has invested €37 million, also included the development of three new power lines that are already in service: Cerdà–Hospitalet, Cerdà–Aeropuerto and Cerdà–Zona Franca. All these infrastructure assets are included in the current Electricity Planning framework approved by the Council of Ministers, which is binding on Red Eléctrica.

The investment allocated to developing the Electricity Planning framework in Cataluña is primarily aimed at supporting new industrial projects in the Tarragona chemical complex, the Port of Barcelona and Martorell. It also covers other electricity infrastructure projects designed to strengthen the electricity supply across the region, boost economic activity and advance the energy transition. Together, these efforts are part of Red Eléctrica's ongoing commitment to the region, as well as the continuous improvement and support for economic and social development.
