Discover what Red Eléctrica is, what we do, and why we are the backbone of the electricity system in Spain and the ecological transition.
Red Eléctrica expands the Magallón substation to boost the industrial base and reinforce the transmission grid in the province of Zaragoza
The project, which represents an investment of €11.3 million, will include the installation of a new 400/220 kV transformer and will also serve to integrate new renewable generation into the electricity system.
Red Eléctrica, the Redeia subsidiary responsible for the operation and transmission of the electricity system in Spain, has begun expansion works at the 400/220 kV Magallón substation, located in the Zaragoza municipality of the same name.
The expansion of this substation, which involves an €11.3 million investment, includes the installation of a new 400/220 kV transformer and the construction of two new bays: one in the 400 kV switchyard and another in the 220 kV switchyard. This will increase electricity transmission capacity in the area, reinforce supply, and continue to advance the integration of new renewable generation. Additionally, it will facilitate meeting future industrial demand in a context of growing economic and energy development in the surrounding area.
The Magallón substation plays a strategic role in the region by acting as an evacuation point for renewable generation, thereby promoting the incorporation of more sustainable energy into the electricity system. Furthermore, its connection with other infrastructure in Aragón reinforces the grid meshing and contributes to a more robust and reliable system.
This expansion, which is now getting underway, forms part of the current electricity planning cycle, through which Red Eléctrica has already driven the development and expansion of various substations spread across the three provinces of Aragón. These include the 220 kV Espartal, 220 kV Ave Zaragoza, 220 kV Esquedas, 220 kV Montetorrero, 400/220 kV Peñaflor, 220 kV Plaza II, 400 kV Mudéjar, 220 kV Cartujos, and 220 kV Villanueva de Gállego substations, among others.
