Today, IES Marco Fabio Quintiliano from Calahorra, Colegio Santa María Marianistas from Logroño, and Colegio Nuestra Señora de la Piedad from Nájera emerged as winners of the regional final of the entreREDes Olympics. They will represent La Rioja in the national final, which is scheduled for June 15. In this competition, secondary school students from across the country will compete to demonstrate their mastery of the subjects taught throughout the year (geography, physics, mathematics, literature…) and especially, their understanding of energy, ecological transition, and the Spanish electricity system.

The regional final, held at the Menesianos School in Santo Domingo de La Calzada, saw 112 students vying for a spot in the national final. Participants represented Colegio Menesianos (Santo Domingo de La Calzada), IES Marco Fabio Quintiliano (Calahorra), Colegio Alcaste-Las Fuentes (Nalda), Colegio Nuestra Señora de la Piedad (Nájera), IES Comercio, IES Batalla de Clavijo, and Colegio Santa María Marianistas, all of them located in Logroño.

The competition involved teams playing entreREDes, a video game developed by Red Eléctrica (the company responsible for the transmission and operation of the electricity system in Spain) to teach younger generations about how the Spanish electricity system works and review classroom content in a fun and interactive manner.

IES Marco Fabio Quintiliano was the two-fold winner in both the 1st and 4th Compulsory Secondary Education categories, while Colegio Santa María Marianistas won in the 2nd Compulsory Secondary Education category and Nuestra Señora de La Piedad in the 3rd Compulsory Secondary Education category. The students and teachers from these schools received their awards from Estrella Hernández, the General Coordinator for Educational Quality of the General Directorate of Educational Innovation of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, and Youth of the Government of La Rioja. Esperanza Abad, the principal of the Menesiano School of Santo Domingo de La Calzada, and Ignacio Valdés from Redeia’s Department of Social Innovation were also present at the award ceremony.

La Rioja has participated in the entreREDes Olympics for the third consecutive year, with a total of 1,605 students from 7 schools using this educational tool throughout the academic year. Across the country, over 40,000 Compulsory Secondary Education students from ten autonomous communities have played the game and participated in the Olympics.

A game to help students understand the energy transmission grid and much more

In entreREDes, players embark on a virtual journey across the country, exploring different lines and substations of the electricity transmission grid. To progress, they must answer questions about the electricity industry and the subjects taught at school: Geography and History, Physics and Chemistry/Biology, Mathematics, Spanish, and Leisure and Culture.

Among other topics, players learn about renewable energies and their contribution to the generation mix, interconnections with other countries, the existence of a cable for electricity exchange with the Balearic Islands, and the significance of the Canary Islands' isolated electricity systems.

The game, which is completely free, has been designed as a support tool for teachers in the classroom, a revision tool for students at home, and a fun activity to enjoy with family and friends. It offers three different game modes (Classroom, Challenge, and Classic) to adapt to changing educational needs and is available on desktop computers (Windows, MacOS, and Linux) as well as mobile devices (Android and iOS).
