The Balearic Islands electricity system consists of 2 subsystems, which are electrically isolated: Mallorca-Minorca and Ibiza-Formentera.
The Mallorca-Minorca subsystem is linked by a 132 kV interconnection, while the Ibiza-Formentera subsystem is linked by two 30 kV interconnections.
Commissioning of an interconnection to link both subsystems (Mallorca-Minorca and Ibiza-Formentera) and merge them into a single one is planned. The interconnection of the Balearic Islands electricity system to that of the peninsula, through two submarine links, is also planned for 2011. Reliability and quality of the system's power supply will be enhanced, too, by this interconnection.
Red Eléctrica operations are carried out from its main office in Palma de Mallorca. Transmission grid planning, management of applications for access to the transmission grid submitted by generation and distributing utilities, drawing up plans for generation and transmission facilities maintenance, performance of generation units economic dispatching, and organizing the system's electricity metering operations are implemented from the mentioned main offices. The utility has also available a Control Center for real time supervision of the Balearics electricity system.
The Control Center is responsible for the electricity system supervision, which is coordinated with the control centers of the Balearic Islands generation and distribution utilities. Specially, it has to carry out, besides other, the real time supervision of the electricity system, operations scheduling to meet the demand, real time management of generation-demand deviations, as well as the follow up and study of works carried out in the transmission grid.
Round-the-clock and 365 days a year, Red Eléctrica supervises the Balearic Islands electricity system operation, handles generation-demand deviations, delivers the required instructions for the System maintenance to meet the parameters shown in the operation procedures, and manages works carried out on the transmission grid (based on both weekly and short-term scheduling.
Generation utilities supply Red Eléctrica the information required for scheduling power generation (units availability: fuel reserves, etc.) as well as demand forecasts received from distributors, traders and consumers.
Demand peaks, in the Balearic Islands, are usually related to the busy tourist period, when temperatures are highest, in July and August.
Based on the mentioned information and its own demand forecasts, Red Eléctrica:
The weak points of the existing grid are troubleshooter by Red Eléctrica that submits proposals for the infrastructures required to overcome such weaknesses in the future. Red Eléctrica is also in charge of the planned interconnections between the Balearic Islands with the Peninsula and that between the Mallorca-Minorca and Ibiza-Formentera subsystems.
