Projects

Noteworthy in 2010, from a technological point of view are the following projects:

• Those projects dedicated to determining the limit of photovoltaic production compatible with the security of supply and to improving the forecasting processes regarding wind and solar energy production.
• The application for calculating demand coverage based on probability methods.
• The study of operational reserves in MIBEL (Iberian Electricity Market) with REN.
• Phase II of the development of the unmanned helicopter for the inspection of lines.

Red Eléctrica is actively involved in other projects, currently underway, related to energy efficiency such as the Green Project (proyecto VERDE) of the Ministry of Science and Innovation, regarding the study of technologies for the large-scale introduction of the electric vehicle into the system and the CONSOLIDA project whose objective if the improvement of electricity generation using thermo-solar technology.

In addition, Red Eléctrica participates in diverse technological platforms amongst which noteworthy is FUTURED (Spanish Technological Platform of Electricity Grids) (PDF, 88 KB, only available in Spanish) a unique and strategic project whose objective is the design and progressive development of the 2025 electricity grid.

European Sustainability Projects

Red Eléctrica participates in various projects within the European Union Framework Programme for Research, amongst which the following are noteworthy:

• ANEMOS PLUS (system operation with high penetration of wind energy).
• OPTIMATE (Open simulation platform to share new market approaches at pan-European level).
• PEGASE (Pan-European grid advanced simulation and state estimation).
• MERGE Mobile Energy Resources in Grids of Electricity (evaluation the impact that the massive introduction of the electric vehicles would have on the grid).
• TWENTIES (the great initiative of the European electricity sector for the implementation of technologies that allow the integration of renewable energy sources, particularly wind power, in order to fulfil the objectives at a European level regarding energy efficiency and sustainability).

Environmental interest projects

Red Eléctrica has continued with projects regarding the protection of birdlife:

• Study to minimize the impact of electricity facilities on Steppe birds.
• Design of a device to detect the collision of birds with grounding cables.
• Tests to determine which is the most suitable bird nesting deterrent for high voltage towers.
• Cartographic data regarding bird's migratory routes, which will help to determine the route and location of new lines and facilities as well as to establish the impact of existing facilities.
