The EMAS Regulation was adopted by the EU Council

Resolution to adhere to the Environmental Management and Auditing System (Ministery of the Environment).

The AENOR Environmental Management System Certificate in accordance to the requirements of European Regulation 761/2001.

Red Eléctrica is the first Spanish company to be included by the Ministry of the Environment, including all its technical facilities and work centres, in the EU Eco-Management and Audit scheme (EMAS), a scheme whose requirements are more demanding than the ISO 14001 environmental standard.

The objective of EMAS, a scheme which can voluntarily be adopted by businesses and organisations, is to promote continuous improvement in the environmental behaviour of the organisations, to comply with environmental legislation and to communicate to society the environmental commitment of the companies.

In May 1999, Red Eléctrica had already obtained an Environmental Management System certificate in accordance with the UNE-EN ISO 14001 International Standard. The EMAS award is a step further which allows, amongst other aspects, a management tool to be used which is common to the other EU member states and which has a special value in the 6th Framework Programme of the EU in environmental matters.

Despite the similarity and the correspondence of the aspects between the two types of system, the requirements demanded by EMAS are greater than those established under UNE-EN ISO 14001. Noteworthy amongst those is the obligation to publically carry out periodic environmental declarations which can be audited and to report the Company's environmental behaviour to stakeholders and to society as a whole, that in the case of Red Eléctrica is published yearly in the form of the Environmental Report.

The EMAS Regulation was adopted by the EU Council on 29 June 1993 and it was opened to industrial participation from April 1995. It was revised in 2001 to increase the scope of application to cover all sectors of business activity.
