We guarantee the functioning of the electricity system, 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
As the operator of the Spanish electricity system, Red Eléctrica's principal function is to guarantee the continuity and security of the electricity supply and the correct coordination of the production and transmission system, performing these functions in coordination with the operators and agents of the Iberian Electricity Market (MIBEL) under the principles of transparency, objectiveness and independence. Red Eléctrica also controls the operational functions of both the insular and extrapeninsular electricity systems.
As the manager of the transmission grid, Red Eléctrica acts as the sole transmission agent and as such must guarantee the development and enlargement of the facilities, carry out their maintenance and improvement based on homogenous and coherent criteria. Its role is also to ensure the transmission of electricity between external systems, carried out using the Spanish electricity grid system, is properly managed to provide the manager of any other grid to which it is interconnected with sufficient information so as to guarantee a safe operation and guarantee the access of third parties to the grid under a regime of equality.
In 2010, in compliance with Law 17/2007, Red Eléctrica completed the acquisition of the extra-peninsular transmission assets (Balearic Islands and Canary Islands) and remaining peninsular assets, pending transfer, from the electric utility companies.
