Environmental activities

We work with the commitment to integrate environmental protection in the execution of our day to day tasks and activities. Red Eléctrica identifies and assesses all those aspects derived from its activities which could interact with the environment and generate any type of impact. The main effects are linked mainly to the presence of the facilities (electricity lines and substations), as well as to their construction and maintenance works. Thanks to the application of preventive measures and to the accomplishment of the works according to best environmental practices, the potential effects are reduced and the resulting impacts are compatible or insignificant. In those cases when effects are produced in the environment, the most adequate corrective measures are applied with the purpose of mitigating or compensating for them.

The grid planning stage

Red Eléctrica collabore with the MITYC (Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce) in the process of strategic environmental evaluation of the electricity planning. In addition, Red Eléctrica collaborates with several autonomous communities on the development of regional electricity infrastructure plans.

The project stage

Red Eléctrica, above and beyond its legal obligations, carries out environmental impact studies on all of the projects of new installations which it promotes and constructs, as well as on the projects of new installations commenced by companies foreign to Red Eléctrica which may require it to construct these installations. These environmental studies are submitted to the competent body in environmental matters for their approval and formalization.

These studies are what have the greatest repercussion in the reduction of possible impacts on the natural and social environments, since most of the impacts that can be caused by an electrical power line, and especially its magnitude, depend mainly on the layout or site determined for the line or substation, avoiding the most sensitive zones.

Standard regulations alinement impact on socioeconomic means, on historical patrimony, on water, on vegetacion and on birdlife. The environment alinement have not enviromental impact and avoid the most sensitive zones

The construction phase

Red Eléctrica supervises from an environmental perspective all the construction works of new lines and substations carried out by contractors to ensure the compliance with environmental requirements, and to verify the effectiveness of the corrective and preventive measures implemented.

The maintenance stage

During the maintenance phase we systematically carry out periodic reviews and audits on the facilities in service which allow us to define and implement preventive and corrective measures, detect potential environmental incidents and verify the effectiveness of the measures put in place during the construction phase.
